Welcome to Avoch Highlands
Avoch Highland Cattle Fold
Avoch Fold, owned by Sue and Paul is located on 270 acres of alpine pastures in the Snowy Mountains region in NSW, Australia. We are focused upon production of high quality, grass reared, fully imported bloodline pedigreed Highland cattle. We aim to raise Scottish type cattle with outstanding breed, temperament and beef attributes. We practice high welfare animal handling and husbandry, with minimal interventions and pain control whenever this is necessary. Our current stud bull, Lord Addams of Glenstrae was Australian Grand Champion Bull in 2016 and has produced many other national show winners. With Paul a cattle vet and Sue a pharmacist, we are in the best position to provide optimal care for our fold and those of our clients.
Why Highlands?
The Scottish Highland Cattle breed is one of the oldest in the world. Believed to be descended from the ancient Auroch cattle, Highlands have been bred in and for the moors of Scotland for hundreds of years. Adapted to live in a cold and windy climate they have development a short stocky frame, thick double coat and good pasture conversion rates to enable the use of all available feed. The cold and windy hills of 'Gowan Brae' provide the perfect location in Australia for this proud breed.
Producing an extremely tender, flavorsome meat, their thick coat means that they lay down less fat over the muscle layer and Avoch's exclusively grass fed stock means great tasting healthier beef.
Why Avoch?
Sue and Paul have strong links back to Scotland, with Avoch Highlands being named for the area that Paul's family originated. Avoch Highlands is located on the property Gowan Brae, the name of Paul's family's home on the Black Isle in the North of Scotland.
Sue's family have equally strong Scottish connections with a recent and direct family link back to Auchtermuchty in the Burgh of Fife in Scotland.
So it's fair to say that the Avoch Highland Cattle Fold, located in the snowy highland region of Australia, owned by Scottish descendants, is the epitome of the spirit of the breed.
